Secret Romance + Mistaken Identities + Practical Jokes + Missing Jewels + Chaos = Comic Delight
This enduring "laughing comedy" was first performed in London during the spring of 1773. Sir Charles Marlow wants nothing more than for his son to marry the daughter of his best friend, Richard Hardcastle. Young Marlow is shy, timid, reserved, nervous, tongue-tied around upper-class women, while the complete opposite with those of the lower class. Kate Hardcastle quickley realizes she must pretend to be common and stoops from her social position to masquerade as a serving maid in order to catch a husband. This farce adds the subplot of another young couple entangled in forbidden romance and an eligible bachelor who detests the woman to whom his marriage has been arranged to ensure that She Stoops to Conquer or The Mistakes of a Night provides smiles, laughter, and fun.
