Stephen Thomas, Keyboard Studies Coordinator at BYU-Idaho presents a solo piano recital entitled "Whimsy and Wonder: The Scherzo from Beethoven's debut to the 21st Century." In this program, Dr. Thomas will present Beethoven's 1795 Piano Sonata Opus 2, No. 2 which established a musical form invented by his teacher Josef Haydn, the Scherzo. He will continue with the Johannes Brahms grandly dramatic Scherzo Op. 4, and follow with Three Scherzos written for Dr. Thomas, by Californian composer John Marvin, presented here as a world premiere. Finally, the program will conclude with Chopin's mercurial Scherzo in E major Op. 54. Dr. Thomas will also provide commentary through the performance to identify what makes the scherzo 'tick."
