Elder Joe J. ChristensenEmeritus Member, First Quorum of the SeventyFormer President of Ricks College Elder Joe J. Christensen has
served as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy (1989-1999). He served in
the Presidency of the Seventy for more than six years.

general authority, he was serving as President of Ricks College (now
When he became emeritus in 1999,
he and Sister Christensen were called to serve as President and Matron of the
San Diego Temple.
Elder Christensen fulfilled his military
obligation serving as an officer in the United States Air Force and received his PhD degree from
Washington State University.
He was associated with the Church
Educational System for more than 30 years and served as Associate Commissioner
of Education, responsible for the administration of the world-wide program of
Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. Elder Christensen has been director of several
institutes of religion adjacent to various universities including the
University of Utah.
He has served as president of the
Mexico City Mission, and for four years, as president of the Missionary
Training Center in Provo, Utah, during which time more than 58,000 missionaries
came for their preliminary training.
Just recently called and
ordained as a stake patriarch, he is the author of numerous
published articles and of four books on Gospel themes.
Joe married Barbara Kohler of
Midway, Utah, and they are the parents of six children-three sons and three
daughters. They have 28 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
