David C. Nielson
Managing Director, LDS Church Audio/Visual Department
David Nielson was born in Provo, Utah, the son of Carl and Carol Nielson. Shortly thereafter, his father began a job as a CES instructor at San Jose State. Davide spent his childhood in San Jose. From 1988-1990, David served as a missionary in the West Indies mission. In 1995, he married Shawna Lynch and they had five children together. Shawna passed away in 2005 and David met and married Amy Christensen. They have had one child together. Amy has legally adopted the other five children and together, they have worked to address both the blessings and challenges that come from blending families together.
David has earned three degrees, all from BYU. His bachelor’s degree is in Business Management, his master’s degree is in Educational Leadership and his PHD is in Instructional Psychology and Technology. His educational focus has been on how to communicate messages effectively, particularly via digital channels.
David’s first job out of college was writing and designing educational materials for use by participants in the BYU Travel Study Program. From there, he was hired by BYU Independent Study to develop online courses for the university. He was involved in designing the first online course at BYU. The program grew and David was eventually asked to be the assistant director of BYU Independent Study.
In 2000 David was invited to take a position with the Audiovisual Department for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he designed messages and presentations for the Brethren. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to work with a cross-departmental team involved in the first major releases of LDS.org and Mormon.org. In 2006 David was asked to become the managing director of the Audiovisual Department and now serves as the managing director of the Publishing Services Department. This department produces all media, publications, and websites for the Church.
